Zurline Baker was born in Louisiana to Frank Stovall and Hallie and became a longtime educator in Shreveport. By 1926 she was teaching in the public schools and received first prize for a table scarf in the State Fair textile show. She later married Rev. Napoleon H. Baker of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and continued her work as a teacher, religious worker, and community participant. Her obituary identifies her as a native of Mansfield and a retired public school teacher, as well as a member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Methodist Minister’s Wives, the Louisiana Education Association, the National Education Association, the Mary Church Terrell Social Club, and the National Association of Colored People; she was also a charter member of the Delta Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She died at Sara Mayo Hospital in New Orleans and was returned to Shreveport for services at Saint Paul Methodist Church. She was buried in Lincoln Cemetery. Her husband survived her by several months before his death in 1968.
