💗💚 Happy 104th Birthday to Diamond Soror Rachel Robinson! 💗💚

Sometimes history begins with a simple introduction from Sisters gathered together.

As Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® gathers for our 72nd Boule in the Far Western Region, it seems especially fitting to celebrate one of our own whose life reflects the very purpose of Boule.

Long before she became Diamond Soror Rachel Robinson, she attended UCLA as a student sitting in Kerckhoff Hall with friends who were pledging Alpha Kappa Alpha. The young women were discussing the social progress of Black Americans when another student walked by.

One of the pledgees turned to Rachel and asked,

“Rae, would you like to meet him?”

Rachel politely replied,

“Why...of course.”

That student was Jackie Robinson.

Despite what Hollywood might have us believe, it was hardly love at first sight. Jackie later recalled that Rachel’s friends had already warned her about his confident reputation, and her greeting was courteous, but far from impressed.

History, however, had other plans.

Rachel would later become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated., joining through the Far Western Region, the very region hosting our current 2026 Boule. Sorors stood beside her on her wedding day, and throughout her life she embodied the ideals of our Sisterhood. 

Part II : Rachel Robinson's legacy extends far beyond being the wife of a baseball legend.

She became a nurse, educator, professor, mental health professional, housing advocate, civil rights leader, founder of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and the guiding force behind the Jackie Robinson Museum. Through scholarships, mentoring, leadership development, affordable housing, and historical preservation, she has changed countless lives.

As I read through the 1976 Boule materials where she attended as a headliner, I couldn't help but notice how closely Rachel's life mirrored the Sorority's national focus on scholarships, leadership training, heritage, and service. Fifty years later, our current Initiatives Strengthen Our Sisterhood, Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Advocate for Social Justice, Enhance Our Environment, and Uplift Our Local Community, continues that same mission.

And sometimes a young woman from the Far Western Region grows into a Diamond Soror whose impact reaches generations.

Happy 104th Birthday, Soror Rachel Robinson. Thank you for showing us what lifelong sisterhood, leadership, and service truly look like. 💗💚
