Nannie Appleby was an educator, civic volunteer, and community leader in Shreveport, Louisiana. She spent more than 52 years in Caddo Parish and was one of the charter members of the Delta Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and worked in several civic capacities, including service as a Gray Lady at the Veterans’ Hospital and as a driver for the American Red Cross. She was a member of the NAACP, the Y.W.C.A., and the Armchair Bridge Club.
Appleby was also one of the first three Black precinct commissioners in the State of Louisiana and later served as a consultant on voting machines for the state. A devoted member of W.H. Jones Memorial C.M.E. Temple and Hartzell C.M.E. Temple, she participated in church and community service throughout her life. She was also featured in the Ivy Leaf magazine for her public and professional contributions and participated in Fashionetta programming of Delta Lambda Omega.
She is remembered for her long record of community involvement and dedication to civic and educational advancement in Shreveport.
