Thelma Horton was born in Georgia in 1920, the daughter of educator-adjacent Atlanta families who lived in the collegiate community surrounding the Atlanta University Center during the late 1930s and early 1940s. By the early 1940s, she was active in campus social and civic life and later became a charter member of the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated while attending Morris Brown.
In Westchester County, New York, she became a noted educator & served for many years as the Supervisor of the Guidance Department at Woodlands High School in Hartsdale. She oversaw college-prep counseling and organized financial-aid workshops for parents and students.
Thelma was also active in Jack and Jill of America, Inc., where she held leadership positions, including installing new chapter members in Westchester County. She frequently appeared in local newspaper coverage of community events, youth programs, and educational initiatives.
