Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Morris Brown College
Chartered January 5, 1942
In the fall of 1941, six Morris Brown women organized an Ivy Leaf pledge club inspired by the ideals of Alpha Kappa Alpha. On the night of January 5, 1942, they were initiated as charter members of Gamma Gamma Chapter, an undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated on the campus of Morris Brown College.

In 2002, Morris Brown College lost its accreditation, which significantly affected student enrollment and ultimately led to the dissolution of campus Greek life, including the Gamma Gamma Chapter. By 2010, during the 64th Boule in St. Louis, Missouri, the membership body voted to dissolve the charter of the Gamma Gamma Chapter due to uncertainty surrounding the university’s future.
However, in recognition of the chapter’s cultural significance and the rich legacy of its members, devoted sorors of Gamma Gamma made a passionate plea to preserve the chapter’s name for potential reestablishment should Morris Brown College recover and campus life be restored.
That vision came to fruition in 2022 as Morris Brown College, under new leadership and with renewed institutional vitality, regained viability as a thriving HBCU. In 2025, through the leadership of The Honorable Tiffany Moore Russell, Esquire, the 20th South Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, and in collaboration with the university and devoted sorors, the Gamma Gamma Chapter was officially approved for rechartering.
Today, we celebrate not only the new charter members but also the triumphant return of Gamma Gamma Chapter—a legacy sincere and rare. This moment marks both a continuation of history and the beginning of a new chapter in the story of Morris Brown College and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
