all the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority since its beginning, began receiving letters from corresponding secretary Norma Boyd to determine if they had agreed to any changes in the sorority.
This was in response to the statement made by Myra Davis that suggested that “Hemmings was receptive of the idea and members of AKA (including some who had graduated) were contacted to see if they would accept the change. All who were contacted agreed to the change.”
As a result of this contact, it was determined that AKA had NO graduate members and less than 10 undergraduate members had actually agreed to ANY change.
The information gathered in the returned correspondence was used to petition Howard’s Board of Trustees for permission to seek incorporation beyond the campus in December 1912.
The board authorized the action at its January 6th, 1913 meeting, making Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority the first BGLO to seek and obtain legal rights to expand before expanding.
