John Marion Newsom (1907–1971) was a dedicated educator, scholar, and civic leader. A graduate of the University of Chicago and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Masons, he taught biology at Shaw University, DuSable High School, and later served as head of the Science Department at Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago. He and his wife, Dorothy Jackson Newsom, were committed to education, family, and community, raising two children (Michael & Marion) while actively supporting the NAACP. John’s legacy lives on through the countless students he mentored and the community he uplifted.
