Hazel Quander
(Oct 6 1900 – Mar 31 1973)
A lifelong servant‑leader, Hazel Hayes Quander turned every stage of her life into an opportunity for community uplift. After earning a B.S. from Western Reserve University, she organized Chicago’s first Women’s Auxiliary of Red Cap porters and, once settled in Cleveland, rose quickly through the ranks of the I.B.P.O.E. of W.—serving as Secretary of the Elks Joint Educational Committee, Daughter Ruler of Mollie DeBraun Temple No. 686, and later Loyal Vice Ruler of the Northern District Daughters Council, where she helped lobby for an Ohio Fair Employment Practices Act.
An active member of Mount Zion Congregational Church, the 11th‑Ward Democratic Executive Committee, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (she was the sister‑in‑law of incorporator Nellie M. Quander), Hazel directed scholarship contests, civic banquets, and countless church programs—all aimed at expanding educational and political doors for Black Clevelanders. She passed away on March 31, 1973 and was memorialized at The Ball Funeral Home; her legacy endures in the many students, voters, and community leaders her work empowered. 🩷💚 #realalphakappaalphawomen
